New guy here, and my wife and are are planning on adoption and could use some advice. First problem we know, is that we're out of the country for the time being. So with that said, do adoption agencies allow you to start the paper work before you return back to the states?
And secondly, does anyone know of reputable places to adopt from?
Thanks
Joe

Re: Hello all.
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 2:06 PMAgencies facilitate adoptions all over the country, I would be surprised if they wouldn't start the process with you because you were out of the country. Thing is, you won't get very far, you will have to meet with a social worker and that would most likely (if not definitely take place here in the states). But the gathering of paperwork most certainly can be started (marriage, birth certs), . . . you are going to have to get letters of recommendation, doctors letters, . . . yadayadayada, I'm sure you could get going on it so that way when you came back you would have most stuff prepared and could jump right into your social worker visits. Good luck!

Tue, May 20, 2008 - 7:31 AMHave you decided how you want to adopt? That is really the first step. You could do some research about agencies online, but I would want to wait and actually meet with them to make sure it is a good fit. For foster-to-adopt, the first step for all of the orgs that we worked with was attending the orientation. The second step was getting screened by a social worker.
The paperwork was actually close to the end of our process and only took about a month.
If you are planning on doing a different kind of adoption, the process is probably really different...Actually, it probably varies a lot state to state, too.

Re: Hello all.
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 6:06 AMWe've adopted two little girls from the County in which live in and have had no troubles at all. It was just a ling process. I am pretty sure you'd have to be a resident of the County in order to start the process.
