New guy here, and my wife and are are planning on adoption and could use some advice. First problem we know, is that we're out of the country for the time being. So with that said, do adoption agencies allow you to start the paper work before you return back to the states?
And secondly, does anyone know of reputable places to adopt from?

Thanks

Family reactions to Adopting

Hi there! Since my last posting my hubby and I have come a long way. We have signed on with an agency and now are moving through our homestudy! We have decided to try and adopt from Thailand! We are totally excited and have been sharing our decisions with our friends and family. I'm surprised by some of their reactions. My brother is feeling very awkward at the concept of adoption and I feel disappointed that I may not be getting the support from him that I thought I would. Up until very recently both him and my mother have been trying to encourage me to take fertility drugs despite my firm decision not to. I'm frustrated and have been wondering what other peoples experiences been with family members?

Hey everybody,

I see that this tribe has been inactive for a while, I hope to get it going again. Any tips on what to look for in adoption lawyers. I've been looking at parenting networks around where I live and finding some referrals, unfortunately nobody I know can recommend anybody. If anybody knows of somebody they liked working with in the East Bay Area, please let me know.

It looks like my husband and I are going to do the classes for foster parent certification in October and November. We are excited and scared! We expect to be able to complete the paperwork and home visit shortly after and be ready for some kids by next year. We are going through an agency that contracts with Alameda County called A Better Way.

How hard is it to have a definitive diagnosis? Teachers seem to want all kids on drugs to keep them placid? I have heard that your child can be taken from you if you fail to medicate them? Is that true?

Feelings? Opinions? Experiences?

For me it seems that no matter how do you get your children, they might end up hating you because you're their parent. So in that way adopting and giving birth is just the same thing. Sad, isn't it?

Good Afternoon, all! I have a friend (sitting next to me at the moment) who is trying to reconnect with her birth family.

I was wondering if those of you who have searched/found your birthfamilies have any suggestions as to how she might start.

She was adopted in California, in 1980, and it was finalized in 1981, again in California. She had contact with her birth mother very briefly in the early 90's and thinks she may be living in the Tacoma Washington area. Her birth father was supposedly living in Arizona.

Do any of you have suggestions about how to go about finding them, or have done searches in those states before?

Thanks,

That's not my question, it's a question I've had from others. My partner and I are planning on starting the adoptin process after I finish grad school. We are a lesbian couple and I totally expected to have complete understanding from the gay community about our desires to adopt. But more often than not, we are asked "Why don't you want to have your own? You could get a sperm donor you know." This question infuriates me. I don't understand why people value genetically related children over adopted. Like adopted children are a second choice.

My question is has anyone else had a similar experience?

Greetings,
My husband and I have just recently decided that giving adoption a chance is a possibility for us. However neither one of us has any idea about the where to's, how to's and so forth when it comes to approaching the issue of carrying out an adoption.
I am looking for some sort of idea about how to start the process... who do we talk to locally, what are reputable agencies and how does one determine that, what can we expect in a home study... that kind of stuff. Any and all advice is welcome.
We have been married 10 years, own our own home, have one child who is 7, homeschool, and are active in a number of hobbies including fishing, historical reenactment, hiking, and more.

Thank you in advance,
In Peace,

Adoption Tax Credit

Adoption Tax Credit

This year adoptive parents may be able to take a tax credit of up to $10,160
for qualifying expenses paid to adopt an eligible child. Also, up to $10,160
paid or reimbursed by an employer for qualifying adoption expenses under an
adoption assistance program may be excludable from gross income. Adoptive
parents may claim both a credit and an exclusion for expenses of adopting an
eligible child.

Finally, beginning in 2003, the maximum credit and exclusion of $10,160,
subject to certain income and tax liability limits, will be allowed for the
adoption of a child with special needs even if the adoptive parents do not
have ANY qualifying expenses. This "refundable credit" has long been sought
by adoption advocates.
My husband and I are in the process of adopting from China. Based on the few messages I've read, I'll offer my info for the questions people have had:

1. International Adoption costs a minimum of $10,000.00 It doesn't matter what state you live in or what country you adopt from, expect a minimum of $10,000.00

2. You must do a Homestudy. For either domestic or international, you must complete a Homestudy which consists of approx 4 visits with a licensed Social Worker who will inspect your home, and ask you very detailed very personal questions to determine the kind of marriage you have and whether or not your fit to be a parent.

3. A bazillion documents are required: official copies of birth certificates, marriage license, divorce papers, tax returns, letters from employers, complete physicals, and any police/court papers.

4. You will be finger printed- by your local police and the FBI. If you have had **any** run ins with the law, you need to disclose it upfront with your adoption agency and your Social Worker. Even if it was a misdemeanor when you were 16 - it **will** show up.

5. Do an internet search for "International Adoption" or "Adoption" to find listing of agencies all over the US. Write or call them and inquire about matierials they can send, and if they're having an information night. If they are, try to attend: it's a great place to learn more about an agency and the programs for their country.

6. Every country (including the US) has requirements. For example, China's requirements are: you must be at least 30 years old to adopt. If this is your first marriage, you must have been married for at least 3 years. If it is the 2nd, then 5 years. If you have been divorced more than 2x, then you are not acceptable. Single women are accepted as applicants, but they only accept so many single applications in a year. Single men may adopt, but they must sign a statement that they are not homosexual, and there will be a minimum of 30 years between their age and the child they adopt. Etc.

7. Infants, as in newborns, are hard to come by. Now, if you adopt domestically, then it's a different story. But the minimum age of a child coming out of China is 6 months. Most of the children are 8 months - 15 months. This is also about the same for Korea. Russia has more children over the age of 1. Programs for Romainia, Cambodia, and Vietnam are currently closed.

8. With the exception of Korea who has the adopted childern escorted from Korea to the US, you will travel to the child's country to get them. For China, it's 1 visit, approx 10-14 days. Russia is 2 visits each at least 1 week.

9. This is *not* a quick process. The avarage international adoption takes 1 1/2 - 2 years. I know people who have spent 5 years trying to adopt domestically.

I think that's the quick hit. I'm sorry this is so long. If anyone has specific questions, just post!

My husband and I want to adopt children. I have no idea where to begin the process. He and I are looking for twin girls or sisters at the age or younger than two. We were thinking of an international adoption. Why girls? Why two?

I was adopted, as was my mother, as was her mother. It is my turn to provide a loving home. Also, I think little girls get a bum rap in the world due to different cultural ideals. Twins or siblings could provide support for each other as they get older and find out that, although Mommy loves them very much, they were adopted.

In short, where do I begin? What is expected of me? What kind of costs am I looking at?
